Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Robert F. McDonnell has outraised Democrat R. Creigh Deeds this month and has nearly twice as much cash left for the final week of the campaign, according to finance reports filed Monday.
Mr. McDonnell raised $4 million, giving him $1.8 million cash on hand, while Mr. Deeds raised $3.1 million and has just under $1 million remaining.
The records, posted by the nonprofit Virginia Political Access Project, covered the first three weeks of October and showed that the candidates continue to collect large donations from many familiar supporters.
Donations to Mr. Deeds included $1.7 million from the Democratic National Committee, bringing its total spent on behalf of Mr. Deeds to $3.5 million. A political action committee representing the Communications Workers of America gave Mr. Deeds $75,000, for a total of $175,000. Barbara J. Fried of Virginia-based Fried Companies Inc. gave Mr. Deeds $25,000, after previously donating $100,000.
Mr. Deeds also received $100,000 from the American Federation of Teachers.
Mr. McDonnell received contributions of $50,000 from Richard Gilliam and $25,000 from Marvin Gilliam Jr. of coal company Cumberland Resources Management. Richard Gilliam has donated a total of $175,000 to Mr. McDonnell, and Marvin Gilliam has given the Republican a total of $85,000. Smithfield Foods Inc. gave Mr. McDonnell $50,000, bringing the company’s total contribution to $75,000.
William Williams, an executive with Fairfax-based InfoReliance Corp. gave his first donation of $28,500. Mr. Williams and six other executives from the company gave Mr. McDonnell a total of $61,000 during the reporting period.
Other donors to Mr. Deeds included author John Grisham, a Democratic donor who supported one of Mr. Deeds’ primary opponents, Terry McAuliffe, with $50,000 earlier this year. His $25,000 donation to Mr. Deeds was his first of the general election season.
The Deeds campaign received money from 2,392 donors, the majority of whom contributed less than $200. The McDonnell campaign received contributions from 4,188 donors, with more than half giving $100 or less.
“We are proud of the work the campaign has done to attract support and grass-roots involvement in every corner of Virginia,” said Deeds campaign manager Joe Abbey. “This support will be vital as we get our message out in the final 10 days of this election and look to turn out an unprecedented vote for the Democratic ticket.”
McDonnell campaign manager Phil Cox said, “Virginians are investing in the optimistic campaign and positive vision put forward by Bob McDonnell. Bob has laid out clear, comprehensive and innovative plans to address the challenges we face, and Virginians are excited about his positive vision for the future. That is clear in this finance report. It is equally clear at the grass-roots level.”
On Monday, Mr. Deeds appeared at two retirement communities in Northern Virginia. Mr. McDonnell attended an “Onward to Victory Party” in Richmond hosted by ESPN college football analyst Lou Holtz.
President Obama is scheduled to appear at a rally Tuesday with Mr. Deeds at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. Mr. McDonnell is scheduled to campaign in Northern Virginia with the country’s first elected Vietnamese congressional representative, Rep. Anh “Joseph” Cao, Louisiana Republican.
